A Circuit with Real History

Donington Park Circuit
Donington Park Circuit, Leicestershire

Donington Park first hosted motorcycle racing in 1931 and became a purpose-built circuit by 1933. Between 1935 and 1938, it welcomed international Grand Prix races featuring legendary teams like Mercedes-Benz and Auto Union. The Second World War brought racing to a halt, and the circuit fell into disrepair for more than 30 years.

Its remarkable comeback began in 1977 when motorsport enthusiast Tom Wheatcroft purchased the site and restored it. By the 1980s, Donington was back on the world stage, hosting Formula Two, MotoGP, and the British Touring Car Championship.

Perhaps the most famous moment came in 1993, when Ayrton Senna surged from fifth to first on the opening lap of the European Grand Prix in torrential rain. It is still regarded as one of the greatest drives in Formula One history.

What Makes the Track Special

The circuit has two layouts. The National Circuit is 1.98 miles and suits touring car races and track days. The Grand Prix Circuit extends to 2.5 miles with the Melbourne Loop, adding heavy braking zones and longer straights for endurance racing.

The corners are what give Donington its reputation. Craner Curves is a fast, downhill sweep that demands real bravery. The Old Hairpin rewards smooth, confident driving. The Melbourne Loop is where late overtakes happen. Together, they create a track that drivers and riders consistently rate as one of the most enjoyable in the country.

Events Worth Planning Around

The Donington Park events calendar runs from spring through autumn with something most weekends. The British Touring Car Championship draws huge crowds with close, aggressive racing. The Bennetts British Superbike Championship is pure adrenaline, especially through Craner Curves. The Donington Historic Festival each spring is wonderful for anyone who loves classic cars, with beautifully restored machines from every era of motorsport.

Beyond the headline championships, Donington hosts regular club racing weekends and track days where amateur drivers and riders can experience the circuit themselves. These are often very affordable and great fun even as a spectator.
